  2. Proof of:
    • Four Advanced Placement, AP for short, exams in the High School Diploma or

Requirements for recognition as a university entrance qualification, HZB for short

In grades 9 to 12, 16 "academic units" must be proven:

English4 unitsEnglish IV or Honors or AP English with a minimum grade of C each
foreign language2 units
Social science3 units
mathematics2 or 3 unitsAlgebra II or Trigonometry (11th grade) and Precalculus (12th grade) each with a minimum grade of C.
natural Science2 or 3 unitsin the individual subjects Biology, Chemistry or Physics, each with a minimum grade of C

Mathematics and science in total 5 units

Optional academic units 2

If only grades 10 to 12 have been completed at high school, only 3 units are required in English; the required total number of "academic units" is reduced accordingly to 15.

If these requirements are met, the High School Diploma constitutes a university entrance qualification:

  • for mathematical subjects, medicine, natural sciences and technology in connection with advanced placement exams, AP for short, if four advanced placement exams with at least a grade of 3 are proven in the following subjects. The following AP exams are required:
mathematicsAP Calculus AB or BC
1 science subjectAP Biology or AP Chemistry or AP Physics C (AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism)
1 languageAP French or AP Spanish or AP Latin or AP German or AP English Literature or AP English Language and Composition
1 further subject corresponding to the upper level of the gymnasiumfor example AP European History, AP American History, AP Computer Science or AP Macroeconomics (0.5 credits per units) and AP Microeconomics (0.5 credits per units)

These exams must be taken while attending school.

  • for humanities, social sciences and economics in connection with Advanced Placement exams, AP for short, if four Advanced Placement exams with at least a grade of 3 can be demonstrated in the following subjects:
EnglishAP English Literature or AP English Language and Composition
1 additional foreign languageAP French or AP Spanish or AP Latin or AP German
1 mathematical and natural science subjectAP Calculus AB or BC or AP Biology or AP Chemistry or AP Physics C (AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism)
1 further subject corresponding to the upper level of the gymnasiumUpper level (e.g. AP European History, AP American History, AP Computer Science or AP Macroeconomics (0.5 credits per units) and AP Microeconomics (0.5 credits per units)

These exams must be taken while attending school.

Note: An Advanced Placement examination in German can be recognized as proof of German language skills upon enrollment.

  • in connection with an associate degree, if the associate degree was obtained in a general education course with courses at college level and the two years of study were studied at a recognized university.
In addition, the following requirements must be met:
    • Evidence of five independent general education subjects,
including English, a foreign language, mathematics and a science and
of which at least three subjects in three ascending semester courses each
  • with proof of two successful years of study, provided that the two years of study at a recognized university with courses at college level can be proven that meet the following requirements:
    • Evidence of five independent general education subjects,
including English, a foreign language, mathematics and a science and
of which at least three subjects in three ascending semester courses each
    • Proof of at least 50 percent of the "credits" required for the Bachelor's degree
  • in connection with a passed assessment test, provided that an unweighted, English unweighted, Cumulative Grade Point Average, CumGPA for short, of 3.0 is proven in the High School Diploma

Additional information

  • "Academic unit" means the successful completion of a subject as shown in the High School Diploma over a full school year (1 credit).
  • Only courses at American colleges and universities that correspond to the comparable level of the German upper level can be accepted as "college level" courses. This means
