What is tagging
Tagging term explanation and definition
The part-of-speech tagging
Part-of-speech tags assign a word to a part of speech. This assignment is not always clearly recognizable for a machine not only because of the basic possibility of nouning adjectives and verbs in the German language. Rather, a word like “a” can be used as an indefinite article as well as a numeral. The type of tagging in each individual case is decided by the computer based on the syntax of the sentence and the environment. The ability to correctly assign words to parts of speech is one of the most sensible ways to check the ability of a program to learn. The presentation of the results of the part-of-speech tagging for German texts is mainly done with the help of the Stuttgart-Tübingen tag set, which was developed between 1995 and 1999.
The tag editor
In the case of multimedia content, the additional information is referred to as metadata or tags. In multimedia, tagging relates both to additional information on the individual content and to the collection of listening habits of individual users. The advantage of tagging in the multimedia area is that only the metadata and not the basic data are edited or changed. The tag editors are also known as taggers.
Tagging to mark data
In the daily use of computers and Internet programs, tagging in the form of the marking of data stocks occupies a large area. The best known is the markup language HTML, with the help of which not only specific forms of the display of texts and images are specified, but information is also transmitted to search engines. The most common commands for tagging content, such as italic and bold, are supported by most word processing programs, so users only need to click the appropriate icons and not enter the tags. The usual structure of the HTML tags consists of a combined use of the opening and closing tags. Both are given in angle brackets, with a slash indicating the closing day. Not all HTML tags directly change the appearance of the website content created with their help, some are also used for structuring that is not immediately visible or provide information for search engine crawlers. Other markup languages such as XML do not have a direct effect on the presentation of the content of a website, but mainly provide machine visitors with information about the purpose of the corresponding page. Tagging is also very important to avoid duplicate content. If a website can be reached via different addresses, the search engines use tags to indicate which URL they should evaluate and which not. An essential element of tagging is also the nofollow instruction, with the help of which website operators can ensure that search engines do not use the links stored on them to calculate the link popularity of a linked page.
The social tagging
Even if the number of HTML tags used clearly exceeds the scope of social tagging, many Internet users mainly associate tagging with keywording of content. This is still important for blogs as well as on social bookmark pages and supports the internal search for articles. With regard to search engine optimization, social tagging also played a role temporarily, but is now irrelevant. With the help of tagging, the authors of blog posts and those who set up social bookmarks indicate which keywords they classify as relevant when searching for their texts. The words used as key words do not necessarily have to appear in the text, especially the additional keywording of synonyms is popular. In the 1990s, tagging with key words was also used to convey the search terms essential for an Internet presence to the common search engines. In this area in particular, however, the tagging function was abused extensively, so that search engines no longer take the specified tags into account. Quite a few webmasters entered completely inapplicable terms as tags for their Internet presence so that their pages could also be found when the corresponding search terms were entered. The most popular for incorrect tagging were naturally keywords, which are often searched for. The specification of meta tags is superfluous for search engine optimization today, since these are not taken into account in the page rating anyway. In any case, synonyms should appear directly on the website rather than just in the tags, because search engines evaluate their presence as evidence of the high quality of a homepage. Some offers to create common content and to earn money with it required the addition of tags to every article well into 2011, even if they themselves did not support the search for the corresponding keywords. Today, this form of tagging is only widespread on social bookmark pages and blogs, where it continues to perform an essential function. In contrast to external search engines, the internal search of the corresponding blogs or social bookmark pages continues to take the keywords used into account, so that other members of the respective community can find articles associated with the individual keywords. The social tagging of the corresponding pages also serves to create a list of the topics discussed. Content control is mostly not carried out when tagging blogs and social bookmark pages, but the community expects the use of terms that match the individual posts. It is customary to restrict tagging to a minimum and a maximum number of keywords on social bookmark pages, which must be specified for each article or link posted. When the tags are entered on blog pages or social bookmark pages, the corresponding terms are automatically identified with the necessary attribute. If you still want to enter tags on your own homepage despite the fact that the search engines take the relevant information into account, you can use the HTML tags provided for entering meta tags for the website.
