How you can earn additional money as a freelancer

Make money through affiliate marketing

Affiliate marketing sounds more complicated than it is. Because affiliate marketing is when an affiliate (translation: business partner) independently advertises a company's products or services. This can happen on a blog, a social media channel, in your own YouTube videos or similar.

Suppose you are a blogger and want to promote a product or a certain shop. As a so-called affiliate, you will now receive a unique link (affiliate link) that you place on your blog. As soon as a reader clicks on this link, the online shop or the company registers this with itself. If the reader not only clicks, but also buys, this will also be registered and you as an affiliate will receive a commission.

Depending on the product and affiliate program, this commission can be a few cents or several hundred euros. If you want to learn more about how exactly affiliate marketing works, then we have a detailed article about affiliate marketing for you here.

For people who already have a successful blog or who are followed by many people on Instagram, YouTube and Co., affiliate marketing is simple. Choose a program, register, place links and you're done. However, if you are one of the 95% of people who are neither influencer nor blogger, you probably think that affiliate marketing is not worthwhile for you. That's not quite true.

Because you don't have to be an attractive influencer or well-known blogger to make money with affiliate marketing. All you have to do is know how to control attention on the internet.

Specifically: You have to know which content you have to reach which people at what time so that they not only click your affiliate links, but also convert them.

The classic way to make money with affiliate marketing is to find a niche, create content around that niche, and thus drive people to your page through SEO. The more people visit your site, the more they will click on your affiliate links and ultimately buy.

For example, you could create a niche page about desk lamps. You could have these programmed for you by a web developer. You can then commission SEO writers to create search engine optimized articles for this page, which you then only need to update.

In this way you can set up an affiliate page relatively automatically and with a moderate investment of time, which pays commissions for you month after month. Without having to program or write yourself.

Make money through eBooks

Another way to make money on the side are eBooks. Because nowadays you don't have to be a novelist anymore and convince big publishers of your talent in order to be successful with the written word. All you need is a little talent for language, a problem you can solve, and a self-published book on Amazon.

We wrote an article here on how you can build passive income with eBooks.

But how can you actually tackle your eBook project?

As a freelancer, you probably already have everything you need to do it. Because as a freelancer you are an expert in a very specific area. Otherwise your customers wouldn't book you for you to help them. So you can see that you are already solving a problem in your daily work. All you have to do now is summarize this solution in a written guide.

But maybe you also have specialist knowledge that you can turn into money outside of your self-employment. Are you familiar with food intolerances? You know how to go from a sofa potato to a marathon runner in three months? Are you a negotiator? This is all valuable knowledge that people are willing to pay money for.

When you've found a problem that you can solve with your e-book, all you have to do is write the book. You can leave the design of a cover, the setting of the text or the creation of marketing materials to a professional.
