What is a Roku Canal?
The word "channel" is a misnomer. Roku channels are not like typical TV channels. You can't navigate between them to channel your surfing, and each channel hosts a huge amount of content. Really, it's easier to watch Roku channels than apps.
You will find around 4,500 official Roku channels in the Channel Store. In combination, you get access to more than 450,000 films and TV episodes. There are also several thousand private channels that you cannot find using the usual methods. More on that shortly.
Unfortunately, some of the channels are geo-blocked - you won't be able to access them outside of their intended country. Even if you can install it, no content will play. The workaround for the problem is to install a VPN on your router and create a new Roku account in the country you want. However, step-by-step guidance on this process is beyond the scope of this article.

- StreamFree.tv: StreamFree is also great for cataloging the channels. Instead of publishing everything, it limits the list to the top 200 of each.
- RokuChannels.tv: RokuChannels is arguably the most polished of the three sites. It has a Featured and a Latest List so you'll always be able to keep up to date with what's hot.

Again, the process for installing channels depends on whether you are installing public channels or private channels.
If you're installing a public channel, you just have to channel Press add in the list of the channel. However, if you install a private channel, the process is more complicated.
First you need to write down the private channel code. You can find it on the three pages I mentioned earlier. You can also occasionally find codes on public forums like the Roku subreddit on Reddit. To change the order of the channels, click on " Home " and highlight the channel you want to move. Then press star on your remote control and select Move channel . Use the D-Pad on your remote control to move the transmitter to the new location and press OK .
Deleting channels is easy. Click on " Home " and mark the channel you want to remove. Press the star button on your remote control and select You remove channel from the menu.
Before removing a channel, however, be aware that unlike the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, Roku doesn't maintain a centralized list of the channels you've installed. Once you've removed a channel, it's gone from your account forever.
If it's a public channel, that might not be a problem - you should be able to find it without much difficulty. However, if it is a private channel, the only way to reinstall it is to relocate the channel's unique code. That could be easier said than done.
The legality of the channels
It would be wrong of us to explain everything there is to know about Roku channels without discussing their legality. If you are new to the world of Roku, be sure to read up on the legality of the Roku channels.
First, let's clear up a common misconception: if you can find the channel in the official Roku Channel Store, it's 100 percent legal. It passed Roku's internal testing, and the company deemed it legitimate.
Private channels are a different story. Indeed, the very existence of private channels is somewhat accidental. Roku only made private channels a "thing" so developers could test their apps before launching them in the main store.
Today, Roku is a hotbed of illegal content via private channels. Many of the apps even require a monthly subscription.
However, Roku has taken a much heavier hand with apps like this lately. Many illegal app developers have given up their projects and started working for Android TV instead.
So if you are hoping to find a ton of pirate content on Roku, prepare to be disappointed. And under no circumstances should you give money to the developer of an illegal app.
