How good is Land Cruiser

Test report: Toyota Land Cruiser in the new model year

With the Land Cruiser, Toyota is one of the last manufacturers to have a real SUV in its range. The Land Cruiser is not a soft-washed SUV, but an off-roader of the old guard that does not stop even in challenging terrain. For the 2018 model year, Toyota has refreshed its off-road icon and made it look even more elegant.

In addition to its off-road capabilities, the Land Cruiser can also come up with very luxurious equipment, especially if you choose the President version, which is very different from the base model "Country". While the cheapest Land Cruiser comes to 46,800 euros, you have to reckon with at least 82,400 euros for the top model. We have only expanded the really generous standard equipment with metallic paintwork and an electric glass lifting / sliding roof, which increases the total price of our test car to 84,200 euros.

Also on board with the President are air-conditioned leather seats, a 3-zone automatic climate control, the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System including adaptive chassis, the off-road system, the Toyota Safety System, the Toyota Touch2 & Go Plus navigation system, 19 "- Alloy wheels, a JBL sound system and much more. Equipped with this, the interior looks really very luxurious. Toyota has also redesigned the interior in the course of the facelift and improved it in detail. The operation of the off-road system is now even easier and with large buttons and two rotary knobs in the center console. The mix of materials now also looks more valuable, and the automatic air conditioning is now controlled exclusively by buttons and no longer using rotary wheels.

The redesigned steering wheel is also very successful, the multifunction buttons are quite large, which makes it easy to use the functions. In general, however, you notice that more and more functions have come into the vehicle over the course of the production years. Somewhat hidden to the right and left below the steering wheel there is an abundance of buttons that are intended for all possible functions. The range extends from the automatic high-beam headlights to headlight cleaning and steering wheel heating.

There is no reason to complain about the space available: The Land Cruiser spoils all passengers with plenty of space and comfortable seats. The cool and heatable leather seats in the first row are a particular highlight. The trunk volume is also very generous with a capacity of 621 to 1,934 liters, but the tailgate that does not swing upwards but to the side takes a bit of getting used to. So you need a lot of space to load at the rear, but the rear window can also be opened separately to easily stow small things without having to open the large door.

A Toyota does not leave much of a choice when it comes to the engine, the Land Cruiser is only available with a 2.8 liter 4-cylinder diesel with 177 hp (130 kW). The engine delivers a maximum torque of 450 Nm between 1,600 and 2,400 rpm. This means that the Land Cruiser is by no means overpowered, but you can still make very good progress with it in daily life. The 6-speed automatic is still from the old school and shifts rather slowly, but very softly. In terms of the overall concept, the off-roader is designed more for a leisurely glide.

Even in sport mode, it remains quite cautious, only the suspension is a little tighter. If you roll there in Eco / Comfort mode, you literally float over the road. Thanks to the large displacement, the Land Cruiser is especially blessed with a lot of power during the intermediate sprint. Overtaking maneuvers are better than you might think, while the pure acceleration is not bursting with power. To be on the safe side, Toyota didn't reveal any acceleration values, we stopped for 12.7 seconds in the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h. The top speed is 175 km / h.

Anyone who calls up full power notices acoustically that the engine is not feeling very well. But once you have reached the desired speed, the interior is very quiet, and you can hardly hear anything from the engine and hardly any wind or rolling noises even at high speed on the motorway.

However, the Toyota Land Cruiser plays its greatest trump cards off-road. The off-road system offers a "crawl control", a multi-terrain selection, multi-terrain ABS, an electric rear differential lock and a multi-terrain monitor with steering wheel angle indicator. The height-adjustable body is also very practical in the field, which gives you a few millimeters more room in the worst case and can save you from sitting down. You get the feeling that the Land Cruiser feels more comfortable the harder the terrain gets. This is where the icon can play all of its trump cards perfectly, and you can tell that the Land Cruiser was made for precisely such tasks.

The off-roader is not very restrained when it comes to consumption, the 7.8 liters specified by the factory are hardly manageable even in Eco / Comfort mode. We went with a gentle gas foot and came to around 9.7 liters. The Land Cruiser also shows small weaknesses in terms of safety equipment. Although it has all common assistance systems on board, the adaptive cruise control only works from 45 km / h, which shouldn't be in this price range.

Nevertheless, the Toyota Land Cruiser is a good choice for everyone who wants to climb even the most remote places by car. In addition to the luxurious equipment and space, the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities are the main arguments. The facelift has also done him good in terms of the appearance of the materials and equipment. In addition, he is the last remaining great Japanese who can still be described as an off-road vehicle and not an SUV.
