Largest cities in the world in 2021 by population
The United Nations (UN) provide in their World Urbanization Prospects a regular ranking of the largest cities worldwide. All told, the UN has a total of 233 million people who are at home in the world's largest cities. Not only are the residents of the city center counted, but also the people living in the surrounding urban areas. The UN therefore speaks of “urban spaces” when it comes to cities.
All the numbers in the ranking are from 2018, but are still up-to-date, because the UN does not want to raise the next ranking until 2022/23.
Which are the largest cities in the world and in which countries they are located. An overview.
With 19.2 million People made it to the Japanese city of Osaka in tenth place in the ranking. Above all, it is known for one of the most important ports in all of Asia and is considered the trade center of Japan. For example, the video game developer Capcom and the computer developer Nexon are based here. It also attracts around seven million visitors a year to the city, which is also known as the “kitchen of Japan”.
9th place: Dhaka, Bangladesh
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh and makes it with a population of 19.5 million to ninth place on the list. The metropolis is the economic and administrative center of the country and is located in the middle of one of the largest jute growing regions in the world. Textiles that supply large fashion houses such as H&M and C&A are also manufactured here.
Beijing is one of two cities in China that made it onto the list 19.6 million Residents in eighth place. The capital of the People's Republic of China is home to some of the largest companies in the country as well as numerous cultural treasures, such as part of the Great Wall of China, the Forbidden City or the Temple of Heaven.
Two cities from India also make it into the ranking of the world's largest cities. Nearly 20 million People is home to Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay and so the economic center of India lands in seventh place in the ranking. Numerous buildings built in British colonial style shape the cityscape and several architectural monuments are on the UNESCO list of world cultural heritage. In addition, the Bombay Stock Exchange, founded in 1875, is the oldest stock exchange in Asia.
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and lands with a population of 20.1 million People in sixth place of the largest cities in the world. Among other things, it houses the country’s seat of government, is the location of important religious and state authorities and attracts numerous visitors every year thanks to structures that are thousands of years old, such as the pyramids. For these reasons, it is the most important hub in the country. In addition, numerous companies such as Telekom Egypt and Vodafone Egypt have their headquarters in the metropolis.
5th place: Mexico City, Mexico
Mexico City lies with 21.6 million Residents in sixth place in the ranking. The capital of Mexico is the economic center of the country. As the population grows, the transport and banking industries are becoming more and more important, which has to do with the privatization of the economy and ongoing deregulation. However, as a result of economic growth, Mexico City is also struggling with extreme air pollution. The largest company based in the city is Pemex, a state-owned oil company in the petroleum industry.
4th place: São Paulo, Brazil
São Paulo just missed out on one of the top three places and ended up with 21.7 million Residents in fourth place in the ranking. Unlike other cities in the list, São Paulo is not the capital of Brazil, but the much smaller city of Brasilia. Nevertheless, São Paulo is the economic hub and has the largest industrial metropolitan area in Latin America. Shell Brasil and the Grupo Votorantim concern, for example, are among the city's most important companies.
In third place of the ranking lands with a population of 25.6 million Shanghai. The second Chinese city on the list has the largest container port in the world and is therefore particularly important for the manufacture of ships and other vehicles. In addition, Shanghai is known as a large textile producer.
Delhi or New Delhi is with 28.5 million Inhabitants of the second largest city in the world and at the same time the capital of India. In addition to textiles and electrical systems, agriculture is particularly important in the peripheral areas. The metropolis is also home to major companies such as Indian Oil and NTPC.
The largest city in the world is with a population of 37.5 million People Tokyo, the capital of Japan. It is both the economic and cultural center of the country and attracts almost eight million visitors annually. In addition to New York and London, Tokyo is also one of the three most important trading centers in the world. Many large automobile manufacturers such as Honda, Subaru or Toyota have their headquarters here, but Sony and Panasonic can also be found here.
