What's the scariest modern movie

The 25 best horror films of the last few years

I don't know about you guys, but personally I find horror movies wonderfully relaxing. Because what better way to switch off and forget your everyday worries than looking at people who are currently fighting for their lives? In view of serial killers, zombie viruses and ancient curses, your own problems seem quite small. At least for a moment.

I don't find anything more annoying than watching an exciting film that then has a stupid or predictable ending. Unfortunately not uncommon in the horror genre. It was precisely for this reason that I started looking for the best horror films of the past few years. Well I didn't really have to "search" because, as a first-rate horror fan, I've just listed my favorite flicks for you.

1. Best Horror Movies: A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014)

The film with one of the longest titles in film history is one of the few good and feminist (!) Vampire films that I know. Filmed atmospherically in black and white, you get an impression of how lonely and, above all, dreary it is to live forever. Plus: awesome soundtrack!

Somewhere in Iran: Our nameless vampire lives undetected in the shadows and only occasionally catches prey. Then she gets to know and love the young Arash. He has no idea of their bloody preferences. Until it's too late.

2. Best Horror Movies: When Animals Dream (2014)

Team Werwolf should check out When Animals Dream. The horror film is as atmospheric as the vampire flick 'Let the Right One In' (German: 'So dark the night', 2008) and a rare film gem.

A fishing village in Denmark: Everyone knows that something is wrong with her, only for Marie the transformation into a hairy four-legged friend is a shock. The real monsters, however, are the villagers themselves, who do not tolerate an outsider in their midst and who conjure up their own doom.

3. Best Horror Movies: Life (2017)

After 'Alien' (1979), every sci-fi horror film has to measure up to Ridley Scott's masterpiece. Where most fail, Daniel Espinosa has created an intergalactically good successor with 'Life'. Even the ending is correct here!

Somewhere in space: the crew of the International Space Station found life on Mars. And that's developing at an alarming rate. From the cute goo Calvin a monstrous alien thrives that the scientists would have preferred to leave where it came from.

4. Best Horror Movies: The Final Exorcism (2010)

Exorcism meets mockumentary - in 'The Last Exorcism' the viewer is so often led onto ice that he doubts his own mind. It's fun and gives the old horror spectacle a new kick.

5. Best Horror Movies: The Cured (2017)

In zombie films everyone always hopes that an antidote will be found to make the undead human again. That's exactly what happens in 'The Cured' and I think it's a brilliant move. The result is a successful mixture of tension and drama.

Ex-zombie Senan has a bad conscience. He killed his brother in a blood frenzy and now lives with his wife. He not only struggles with memories, but also with his zombie creator Conor - a narcissist who wants the undead to come to power again.

6. Best Horror Films: Contracted (2013)

What it feels like and how it looks when you slowly mutate into a zombie, 'Contracted' shows in a vivid way. Ingenious body horror for everyone who has a weakness for realistic body transformations.

What at first seems to be just a nasty hangover turns into a nightmare for Samantha. Her body is noticeably deteriorating and her friendships and love affairs are also going down the drain. The question soon arises: what lasts longer - spirit or flesh?

7. Best Horror Movies: Bite (2015)

If you are into body horror films, you shouldn't miss 'Bite'. The strip makes the Cronenburg classic 'Die Fliege' (1986) look like a children's film. It was not for nothing that vomit bags were handed out at the cinema screening.

Casey is bitten by an insect at a bachelorette party in Costa Rica. The small bite turns into a great horror when the bride in Spee gradually mutates into an egg-laying monster insect - much to the chagrin of her fiancé and her best friends.

8. Best Horror Movies: Clown (2014)

While we're on body horror, Eli Roth '' Clown '' shouldn't be missing. The film really managed to shock me - Pennywise can wrap it up!

Family man Kent finds an old clown costume and wants to use it to save his son's birthday party. The stupid thing: he doesn't get the costume off again. But not only the funny clown nose becomes a part of him. All of a sudden, Kent develops a terrific appetite for young children.

9. Best Horror Movies: The Boy (2016)

Horror films with dolls are almost a genre in their own right. With 'The Boy' the genre gets an exciting new twist that turns the supernatural ghost into an unexpectedly real thriller.

Nanny Greta is amazed when she meets her new protégé in the Heershires villa. Brahms is not a person, but a doll - but should be treated like a real child as much as possible. When Greta breaks this rule, a nervous terror of a special kind begins.

10. Best Horror Movies: Mama (2013)

What's creepier than dolls? Right: children! And where there are children in a horror film, supernatural elements are not far away. With 'Mama' the spook gets at least a comprehensive background story and an ending that for me is one of the best in a long time.

The sisters Victoria and Lilly are found completely wild in a forest hut and adopted by their uncle. Apart from the word "Mama", the two of them don't get much out. As they gradually open up to the new family, the unearthly mother being takes shape. And mom doesn't like it when someone takes her children away from her.

11. Best Horror Movies: The Visit (2015)

Only the combination of children and grandparents is scarier than children. Impressively proven by M. Night Shyamalan in his mindfuck horror 'The Visit'. One of the scariest and best films of the last few years!

The siblings Tyler and Loretta spend a week on their grandparents' farm - whom they have never met before. Something seems to be wrong with nana and pop-pop. The behavior of the old is getting stranger. And more threatening.

12. Best Horror Movies: Don't Breathe (2016)

Fede Alvarez also recognized how creepy old men are. With 'Don't Breathe' he delivers a sensational horror thriller and the biggest surprise for me in recent years!

Together with two friends, Rocky wants to relieve ex-veteran Norman by a six-figure sum of money. Without further ado, the three break into the blind man. But he shows himself to be extremely defensive despite the lack of eyesight. And hides one or two secrets in his house.

13. Best Horror Movies: I Am Not A Serial Killer (2016)

Old men and their secrets - that's what the mystery thriller 'I Am Not A Serial Killer' is all about. The film is based on the first part of the same name of the highly acclaimed John Wayne Cleaver-Roman series and is brimming with creativity and black humor.

John is fifteen and a sociopath. He lives according to his own principles, which should prevent him from killing someone. When serial murders start in his hometown, John's interest is piqued. The trail leads him to his neighbor. Old Bill Crowley is obviously much older than expected - and anything but human.

14. Best Horror Movies: The Good Neighbor (2016)

'The Good Neighbor' is also all about a mysterious old man. In this fantastic version of Hitchcock ('Das Fenster zum Hof', 1954), however, everything is terrifyingly realistic.

Together with his friend Sean, Ethan observes and terrorizes his neighbor, the embittered Harold Grainey. The video experiment seems to come to an unexpected end, as both boys end up in court. Right or wrong, the viewer learns only gradually.

15. Best Horror Movies: It Follows (2014)

'It Follows' is actually the perfect deterrent to one night stands. Because a curse is passed on from one person to the other. The result is a great mix of 'Final Destination' (2000) and 'Drag Me To Hell' (2009).

After having sex with a stranger, Jay is pursued by a mysterious being who can take any shape. But luckily it is quite slow. But absolutely fatal for that. And Jay has to wonder if she's ready to sacrifice someone else's for her own life.

16. Best Horror Movies: Hereditary (2018)

With 'Hereditary' the curse is a family matter. The horror shocker was voted worst horror film of the year in its year of release. For good reason, because the pictures are so terrible that you will never forget them.

Not a curse, but real witchcraft is at work in 'The Autopsy of Jane Doe'. A brilliant horror film that combines science and spirituality. Currently you can even find it on Netflix.

Austin and his father Tommy autopsy a very special corpse. The young woman's organs are charred, her tongue cut out and a cloth with ancient characters is hidden in her stomach. It soon dawns on them that they are dealing with a supernatural force.

18. Best horror films: The corpse of Anna Fritz (2015)

We stay in the morgue and devote ourselves to a completely different horror: necrophilia, that is, desecration of a corpse. Even here, not everything is what it seems.

The intact corpse of the famous actress Anna Fritz is brought to the morgue. Pathology clerk Pau and his friends have nothing better to do than assault the dead celebrity. However, it is suddenly more alive than they would like.

19. Best Horror Movies: A Cure for Wellness (2016)

You can see how scary even beautiful places like wellness clinics can be in 'A Cure for Wellness'. The dream-like images are disturbing works of art and the horror plot could have sprung from a modern fairy tale.

20. Best Horror Movies: Ghostland (2018)

'Ghostland' is also a real nightmare and probably the most terrifying horror film on this list. The multi-layered story gets under your skin and raises the question of the extent to which a trauma should be suppressed.

In her youth, Beth, her sister and mother, were attacked and tortured by two strangers in their new home. Sixteen years later, Beth is a celebrated horror writer. Her sister Vera, however, never got over the incident. And the past catches up with Beth too.

21. Best Horror Movies: Midsommar (2019)

'Midsommar' is not for the faint of heart, because the images of the horror film burn themselves directly through the retina into the soul. Bizarre horror with folk sect themes.

A group of friends celebrate Midsummer in Sweden at a community with strange traditions. As people gradually disappear and the pagan festival becomes unsettling, the real purpose for which the strangers were invited is revealed.

22. Best Horror Movies: Get Out (2017)

How ominous it can be to be trapped as a guest in a foreign culture is also celebrated by the surprise hit 'Get Out'. Director Jordan Peele puts the focus in his horror films on People of Color (POC) and frees the "quota black" from his chains.

African American Chris visits his girlfriend Rose's White Family for the first time. In the elite society, POCs are kept as servants. Chris is said to have a similar fate as well, as it slowly dawns on him.

23. Best Horror Movies: The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

After 'The Cabin in the Woods' there shouldn't be any more horror films. Because the satirical flick pokes fun at all the clichés of Hinterwald horror (especially the 'Cabin Fever' series and 'Evil Dead', 2013).

Five friends go on vacation in a lonely cabin in the woods. What they don't know: The location was manipulated by a secret organization to wipe out the group. But the ritual gets out of hand and suddenly the hunters themselves become the hunted.

24. Best Horror Movies: We Are What We Are (2013)

Actually, the film should be called "You are what you eat". But that would just ingloriously make fun of the atmospheric cannibalism horror. So let's leave the title as it is: auspicious and somehow biblical.

Once a year the Parker family fasts and then feast on a feast made from human flesh. Such a proud number of corpses has come together over the years. But the bereaved relatives of the victims do not give up. And the daughters of the Parkers are gradually mutinying against the gruesome family tradition.

25. Best Horror Movies: Frozen (2010)

Just forget it in the ski lift - this nightmare comes true with 'Frozen'. The horror film portrays the desperation and the reactions of the victims so realistically that you just can't look away. For me the best survival horror in a long time!

Due to a misunderstanding, three friends get stuck in the chairlift with their snowboards. At night, alone, in the cold. And operations should only start again in five days. While the wolves are howling below, the chair holder is slowly loosening up above.
