Repair an Office application

Sometimes when an Office application such as Word or Excel is not working properly, restarting the program will fix the problem. If that doesn't work, you can try repairing the application. After completing this process, you may need to restart your computer.

Repair Office from Control Panel

The steps to access the repair tool differ depending on your operating system. Select the operating system you are using from the drop-down list below.

  1. Right click on the start button begin (bottom left) and choose from the pop-up menu Apps and functions out.

  2. Select the Microsoft Office product that you want to repair and choose To change out.

    Note: The entire office suite will be repaired, even if only one application, e.g. B. Word or Excel, is to be repaired. If you have a standalone app installed, you can search for that application by name.

  3. Depending on whether your copy of Office is a Click-to-Run or an MSI-based installation, you will be presented with the following options for how to proceed. Follow the steps for your installation type.

    Click-to-run

    Select in the window How do you want to repair your Office programs? the option Online repair > Repair out to make sure everything is fixed. (The option Quick repair is also available, which runs faster, but only detects damaged files and then replaces them.)

    MSI based

    Choose in Change installationoption repair , then click Further.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

  3. Right click on the Microsoft Office product that you want to repair and select To change from the drop-down menu.

    Note: If you have a suite like Microsoft 365 Family, Office Home & Student 2016 or Office Home and Student 2013, look for the name of the suite - even if you only want to repair a specific application like Word or Excel. If you have a standalone application like Word or Excel, look for the application name.

  4. Depending on whether your copy of Office is a Click-to-Run or an MSI-based installation, do the following, depending on your Office installation type:

    Click-to-Run Installation Type:

    Choose in How do you want to repair your Office programs? the option Online repair out to make sure everything is fixed. Then choose Repair out. (The option Quick repair is also available, which runs faster, but only detects damaged files and then replaces them.)

    MSI-based installation type:

    Choose in Change installationoption repair , then click Further.

  5. Follow the remaining instructions on the screen to complete the repair.

Running the repair did not help. What's next now?

If running a repair didn't fix the problem, use this tool to completely uninstall Office and then reinstall it.

  1. Click the button below to download and install the Office Uninstall Support Tool.

  2. Follow the steps below to download the uninstallation support tool for your browser.

    Tip: Downloading and installing the tool may take a few minutes. When the installation is complete, the Uninstall Office Products window opens.

    Microsoft Edge or Chrome

    • Right-click in the lower left corner SetupProd_OffScrub.exe > to open.

    Microsoft Edge (older) or Internet Explorer

    • At the bottom of the browser window, select the option To run off to SetupProd_OffScrub.exe to start.

    Firefox

    • Select in the pop-up window save file and then from the browser window in the upper right corner the downloads arrow> SetupProd_OffScrub.exe.

  3. Choose the version you want to uninstall, then choose Next.

  4. Complete the remaining screens and restart your computer when prompted.

    After your computer restarts, the uninstallation tool will automatically reopen to perform the final step of the uninstallation process. Follow the remaining instructions.

  5. Choose the steps for the version of Office that you want to install or reinstall. Close the uninstallation tool.
