Why join BITS Pilani?

With a fake story claiming to be endorsed by John Hopkins University in the United States, NDTV has questioned its credibility

By Amol Pawar The news business is a delicate business. If you don't stay true to the facts, you can hit the wall and ultimately lose your credibility. Such is the case with NDTV, which recently released news reports based on an unauthenticated study and is ultimately forced to delete it because the leading research institutes have refused to collaborate. Here is the link of the deleted article with explanations from NDTV: https://www.newsbharati.com/Encyc/2020/3/29/Lies-Damned-Lies-and-NDTV.html?fbclid=IwAR2FFQdJvG2z88q1Qpjqt0OeWasw0tmJtkNk3

Based on this update, we have deleted the IANS history from this report. https://t.co/3MKAQ9cSlh

What does the report say? This report, cited by NDTV, was published by CDDEP (Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Politics). In its COVID-19 study report, CDDEP claims India will have 300 to 400 million (i.e. 30 to 40 crore) corona positive cases. Johns Hopkins University and Princeton University logos are also used in this report. Ramanan Laxminarayan, who was recently seen on the news channel calming more than a million Covid-19 deaths, is the director of CDDEP. What is the truth? Who is "Ramanan Laxminarayan"? Let's break it down one by one. Who is "Ramanan Laxminarayan"? Is he a scientist or an epidemiologist? What authority does he or his team have? It turns out that Ramanan is an Economist (Ph.D. in Economics, not a Doctor of Medicine) and BE in Instrumentation from BITS Pilani. He worked with the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI) and started two companies without prior PHFI approval. In 2016, PHFI terminated its contract and not renewed it. While working with PHFI, Ramanan stole intellectual property for which PHFI sued him and won the case. However, the court ordered him to pay all legal fees to PHFI as well.

Several media outlets, including @IndiaToday and @BBCWorld, broadcast an interview with "epidemiologist" Dr. Ramanan Lakshminarayan, who predicted India will have 200 million coronavirus cases. So who is Dr. Lakshminarayan?

Unauthorized Use of John Hopkins University and Princeton University Logos: Taking illegal routes appears to be a common practice by Ramanan Laxminarayan. To make his Covid-19 report more authentic, he used logos from John Hopkins University (JHU) and Princeton University (PU). But in an age of social media facts, you can't hide that long. A Twitter user “Neelakshi Mann” had doubts and asked JHU and PU to clarify their connection with this report. Here is what they answered

@JohnsHopkins is this study from your students. It is widespread across India and suggests a very bleak picture pic.twitter.com/BuWFjrhLFP

JHU denied any association with this report and PU said that this is research being carried out and validated by their students. Both universities mentioned that as a university they did not collaborate with research; Therefore, they do not support the report. Ramanan Laxminarayan's statistical model “IndiaSIM” What is the “IndiaSIM” model that Ramanan discusses in all interviews? IndiaSim was developed recently, that is, around the 2016 ABM model. It is led by Dr. Itamar Megiddo, who is a senior lecturer in the Department of Management Science at the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. His Ph.D. The leader is Ramanan Laxminaarayan. It is clear that academics promote their studies in disguise. In addition, the CCDEP website claims that they used data from China and Italy in this model and came to a conclusion. We should understand that such data, based on thorough research, are not yet available. In general, it takes a long time for statistical models to mature and become authentic. It seems that Ramanan Laxminarayan is interested in promoting his model. Knowing that it is not yet believable enough, he used the name John Hopkins University. NDTV's fake news is based on the fake report Now the question arises how, with such resources, NDTV cannot verify whether the report was fake or genuine. Or is it NDTV's agenda that leads them to defame themselves by posting fake news out of hate? Having an anti-establishment view is one thing and hating a particular government for not belonging to or following your agenda / ideology is another thing.
# COVID-19: Do media channels use "experts" to create fear? What is NDTV's “modus operandi” here? This is not the first time NDTV has published fake or misleading news to stir up an uproar in the government. It seems that NDTV has forgotten the ethics of journalism. Posting a fake news item based on a fake report could cause a nationwide panic. We hope NDTV understands that it is time to help our fellow citizens not to scare them. News Bharat
