Intermediate zones

Intermediate zones is a thematic show from the rich fund of the prestigious private collection of the Mexican heir of the fruit juice empire Jumex Eugenio López Alonso. Founded less than 10 years ago, it is characterized by professional conception, uncompromising and media diversity and corresponds to the new photo and media collection of the MUMOK with a focus on society-related and media-based art. With the intention of using works from the Colección Jumex to "convey a relevant picture of the state of today's world or at least some of its central aspects" (Edelbert Köb), the exhibition shows transitions between artistic disciplines, cultural practices and phenomena. It addresses places where technology and nature and zones of urbanity overlap with those of depopulation. The works of three generations of artists - many of them live and work permanently or temporarily in Mexico - are presented in four subject areas:

Nature and civilization
The center of the exhibition is Doug Aitken's complex media installation "Diamond Sea" (1987): It shows a 75,000 km² Namibian desert landscape isolated from high security technologies. With its decaying industrial facilities and areas of land destroyed by diamond mining, this reveals itself as a deserted civilization territory and natural space at the same time. Ugo Rondinone addresses the uncanny and fantastic in nature with 12 deep black, mask-like animal heads made of plastic, while Olafur Eliasson expresses the distant and distant in large-format images of nature. The unpredictable violent is in the foreground in the series "Historia Artificial # 3" (1995) by Miguel Calderón. Mark Dion and Minerva Cuevas refer to the ignorance of humans and their ruthless, power-conscious intervention in nature.

Center and periphery
The core of this topic is Jeff Wall's impressive Cibachrom light box "Overpass" (2001). Wall refers to the non-places or non-places in the sense of the French anthropologist Marc Augé - anonymous, without reference to history. In the photographic work Untitled (Shopping Cart, 2000) by Doug Aitken, a lonely, nocturnal parking lot in a shopping center becomes a transitory place. Fischli / Weiss depict an airport at dusk as a symbol for the transit zones of uprooted, modern nomads and Moris (Israel Meza Moreno) deals with the problems of modern metropolitan areas and their desolation in a walk-in installation, José Davila deals with the sterility of typical minimal dwellings in megacities, while Gabriel Orozco documents its decay and dissolution.

Identity and society
Here artists represent individuals from a global world, whose work reflects personal influences and ways of life: Rirkrit Tiravanija, the polyglot artist of Thai origin, travels through the world's art centers where he creates settings for communication and interaction in museums - mostly cooking. Mike Kelley, on the other hand, uses self-therapy to deal with the trauma of his narrow, religiously influenced youth between Detroit and Los Angeles and the perception of the free USA as a madhouse, department store or garbage dump.

Politics and economics
This part of the exhibition bears witness to the fading of left and right ideologies and the absence of current political references - the mirrored double portraits of Abraham Lincoln by Sam Durant are not icons of politics, but part of history. Historical political events are reduced to their symbolic content, such as the manipulability of the masses in Francis Alÿss' video work Cantos Patrioticos (1989-99), or Santiago Sierra's media works, which are more an expression of human indignation than political protest.
