What's the bloodiest moment on Disney media

The second season "The Mandalorian" is in the starting blocks. A series highlight that you can only access exclusively Disney Plus able to see. But one is reluctant to take out a subscription for a series alone. So let's take a look at the Disney streaming service. In addition to exclusive productions, a cross-section through the long Disney film history is particularly attractive.

The company is often very controversial. The mega-corporation now owns an ever-increasing part of Hollywood and cinemas have to deduct more percentages for films than elsewhere. After the dominance of the cinema market, the fairy tale forge now also wants to conquer the new media. We'll find out whether that works for Disney Plus in the test.

When I entered my childhood

The starting shot was given on March 24th. At around 1 a.m., I downloaded the app onto my Fire TV stick and took a first look at the available titles. Of course, as a Star Wars fan, I was hot for the new series The Mandalorian, by far the biggest draft horse at the start of the service. Also that there are already the first two episodes of the final Star Wars The Clone WarsSeason there, I was really happy.

What made my eyes light up was the memory of my childhood. Because there it was, almost my entire television childhood in the form of films and series. Especially those of my very early childhood, when anime was less dominant or I wasn't aware of it as such (Heidi, Wickie).

As series they sparkled to me DuckTales, Darkwing Duck and the Gummy bear gang opposite. Even the Gargoyles, which I unfortunately hardly looked at back then, are part of this nostalgic treasure chest. Also Chip and Chap I really loved it back then and that's why it's already on my watchlist. On the other hand, the real series for teenagers are more disconcerting for me, from which I never really got a lot - but as much as you'd like it to be: A streaming service like this should not only make me happy, but also others.

Same game in the movies. I watch movies like Aladdin, Lion King, the The Hunchback of Notre Dame and HerculesAnd I'm caught up in the hazy memories of my childhood.

It's 1:30 a.m. and my alarm clock wants to wake me up again at 8 a.m. But I can't go to sleep without at least looking at something. I choose the gummy bear gang. For the moment the world is just fine again.

Little exclusive content at Disney Plus in the test

But as nice as it is to indulge in nostalgic memories, the test also requires a bit of objectivity. However, Disney Plus lives from this emotional bond of its users. I can literally imagine how many children are annoyed because they want to watch something, but their parents block the television to see the old hams from the past.

This is also important for the first time, because you are currently bidding Netflixor Amazon Prime significantly more specially produced series than Disney Plus in the test. That is the disadvantage for a provider who is only just entering an already established media world. Besides The Mandalorian, there are hardly any well-known series so far. With High School Musical: The Musical: The Series Disney is at least serving another successful film series - with an extremely unwieldy title.

Otherwise there are also some interesting glimpses behind the scenes at Disney, such as with Disney Imagineering Story or Disney Insider. Film fans can look forward to a few short films as well as the real-life version of Lady and the Tramp looking forward.

A billion dollars will flow into further exclusive productions for Disney Plus this year alone. in the Marvel-Universum are among other things series too Lokiand Hawk Eyeplanned. But also the Monster Inc, the muppets, Phineas and Ferb, Mighty Ducks, Starwars, Toy story and other popular brands original-Content.

Due to the coronavirus, however, many productions are being delayed, some of which were not supposed to be released until next year anyway. That makes this nostalgia factor even more important for Disney Plus.

Good overview with small flaws

Personally, I like the general clarity of Disney Plus. At Netflix, I didn't warm to the fact that I am largely at the mercy of the algorithm and one-line categories and a lot of other content can only be found via search. Disney Plus speaks to me personally much more in the test.

The big franchises are on the start page Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Starwars and National Geographicthat I can target quickly with it. Under it, Disney advertises its current originals, gives recommendations through the algorithm and suggests some top content. Not much different from Amazon Prime or Netflix.

In addition, there are separate pages for our watch list, films, series and originals. The more extensive pages of the films and series are also divided into several categories - but we can also display all of the content. Through this, we not only navigate to the side, but also down to fill the screen. It's just worlds better for browsing on the TV.

The titles are sorted alphabetically. Whereby “alphabetical” is relative at this point. The basis for the sorting seems to be the original title. The film Vaianacan be found at M ("Moana"), Not kissedat N ("Never been kissed"). But even in the original it partly tears film series apart. The ice hockey movie Mighty Ducks stands a long way from his successors, those with D2and D3are titled. Here I would have liked to see films from the same series together. Hopefully Disney Plus will make improvements at this point.

Price and scope of Disney Plus in the test

Especially if you already use a streaming service and cannot part with it, you think twice about whether you want to afford one more issue a month. Disney makes it relatively easy to get started with its current price.

For 6.99 euros per month or 69.99 euros a year you can use Disney Plus. There are over 100 titles even in 4K UHD available. Up to 7 profiles can be used per membership be created and 4 streams at the same time to run. 10 devices you can register at most on Disney Plus. This happens automatically when you log in to the device with Disney Plus. On the devices, Disney promises unlimited downloads to look offline. A fair price, especially when compared to Netflix.

The competitor only starts at 7.99 euros with only one simultaneous stream and SD quality. Four simultaneous streams and Ultra HD are only included in the most expensive variant for 15.99 euros. There is no annual subscription there.

If you want to try Disney Plus first, you can For 7 days with a trial subscription stream. There are more than 500 films and 350 series to disposal. Compared to the USA, where Disney Plus offers more than 600 films, the Germany program from Disney Plus lags a bit in the test. Incidentally, the series also include The simpsons with 30 seasons and more than 650 episodes!

Incidentally, Telekom Magenta customers are particularly pleased. All customers of MagentaMobil, MagentaZuhause and MagentaTV get Disney Plus for the first 6 months at no extra charge. Afterwards, runtime customers receive the streaming service for 5 euros instead of 6.99 euros per month.

Technical details of Disney Plus summarized

  • The standard subscription includes, similar to Netflix, Ultra HD, HDR and Dolby Atmos.
  • Content can be downloaded and viewed in offline mode. Disney promises unlimited downloads on up to 10 devices.
  • Up to seven profiles can be created with one account and used simultaneously on up to four devices.
  • Paused content can be viewed on another device.
  • Seven profiles can be created per account.
  • An account can be used on up to four devices at the same time.
  • Only films that do not exceed FSK level 12 will appear on Disney Plus. All Disney content with an FSK-16 and FSK-18 rating, such as Deadpool, will be available on other streaming services.
  • New series do not appear as a complete season, but with a new episode every week.

Family-friendly program and extras

With more and more streaming platforms, providers also need a certain identity to differentiate themselves from the competition. At Disney, of course, much of that identity lies in its large market share. Films owned by Disney and its associated studios will no longer be available on other platforms as contracts expire.

What is also obvious is the family-friendliness - and Disney has also made it a priority. Only content up to a maximum ends up on Disney Plus FSK12 / PG13-Release. It hurts me a bit because I like to watch harder series and also Deadpool very much like. On the other hand, it is understandable that Disney Plus shows the family image to the outside world. In the USA, other productions are therefore increasingly landing on the service, which is also owned by Disney Hulu.

Unfortunately, we are currently only able to use Hulu using a VPN. With the start of Disney Plus, however, an international door should also open for Hulu. Especially since Disney is also one in the US Bundle of Disney, Hulu and the sports network ESPN, which is also part of Disney for $ 12.99 a month.

Disney Plus can also score points in the test with the offer of Bonus material. DVDs and Blu-Rays have so far had the advantage of bonus material. In contrast to the competition, Disney Plus also has bonus material for many films such as music videos, unpublished scenes and making ofs. For me, a surprisingly consistent step for a company that is late in getting involved in the streaming market itself.

Disney Plus in the test - conclusion

As you can read in the first sections of the test, I was enthusiastic about Disney Plus. But above all, it is an emotional excitement. In principle, it is the same reason why you give children LEGO or why you can still look forward to an exercise egg. Disney Plus is simply full of wonderful childhood memories. It is a time machine that "older" users like me and a very safe streaming world for children to explore.

However, if you are more interested in horror or bloody action, Disney Plus will not get your money's worth. Also, the original Disney Plus content is still in its infancy. However, the current plans provide for some extremely exciting content. How far Disney will continue the series is difficult to predict so far. At least for the draft horse The Mandalorian, the second season is after all dry.

Despite the still manageable exclusive productions, Disney Plus already offers a lot for the money. For comparatively little money, up to four users can stream their Disney favorites at the same time with up to 4K and with unlimited download options. The overview of the content also convinced Disney Plus in the test. Disney has created a great base that is currently causing a lot of enthusiasm on social media.

Disney Plus can be streamed, among other things, via Fire TV Stick (commission link)
