Our everyday life is becoming more and more hectic. The demand for relaxation methods is therefore growing steadily. In addition to yoga and autogenic training, meditation has established itself as a popular relaxation technique. But not all meditation is the same. There are many different ways to meditate. There is basically no such thing as "right or wrong".

In the following article we want to deal in detail with "Transcendental Meditation", TM for short. Have you never heard of that? This is not surprising, because you will not find this meditation offer on the course schedule of your yoga studio.

What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation is a protected term. The technique is only passed on by specially trained teachers. Transcendental meditation uses so-called mantras. This means that as you meditate, you keep repeating a particular word or phrase. Whether you are free to choose the mantra differs from teacher to teacher. Most of the time, however, the mantra is given.

According to TM teachings, you should take 20 minutes of meditation twice a day. The Transcendental Meditation is performed while sitting. You keep your eyes closed. The aim of Transcendental Meditation is to reach a state that blocks out any other mental activity. Translated, transcendental means something like "going beyond". All disturbing thoughts move into the background.

If you do it right, you will slide into a state of complete relaxation. Participants describe that they experienced an unprecedented feeling of inner peace and ease. Nevertheless, the Transcendental Meditation is not entirely undisputed. There are several reasons for this.

Where did the Transcendental Meditation come from?

While other types of meditation can usually look back on several thousand years of tradition, transcendental meditation was not developed until the middle of the twentieth century. In 1957 the Indian Maharishi Mahesh Yogi initiated the new meditation technique. He quickly found numerous prominent followers, which brought the Transcendental Meditation worldwide media attention.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi passed away in 2008. However, the transcendental meditation is still practiced by his followers.

How does transcendental meditation work?

According to followers of TM, it is not possible to teach yourself this type of meditation. While you will find numerous instructions for all other types of mediation on the Internet and YouTube videos to join in, the exact technique of Transcendental Meditation is kept under lock and key by its followers. From our point of view, however, nothing speaks against trying it out with your own mantra.

Think of a word or a short phrase that will make you feel positive. For your inspiration we would like to give you a few examples:

One word mantras:

Positive Beliefs:

  • I believe in myself.
  • I am strong.
  • I rest in myself.
  • Everything will fall into place.
  • Life is Beautiful.

Of course, you can also use known mantras, e.g. B. the classic "Om" or "So 'ham". The important thing is that your mantra feels good and right to you. After you have chosen your personal mantra, get into a comfortable sitting position and close your eyes. Make sure that you wear comfortable clothing that does not restrict you.

Now feel yourself deep inside your body and start speaking your mantra. Whenever your thoughts wander, gently direct them back to the mantra. Meditate in this way for 10-20 minutes. Finally, you should sit still for a few minutes to allow your mind to return to the here and now.

Now what is the difference between TM and "normal" meditation?

At first glance, Transcendental Meditation does not seem to be very different from conventional mantra meditation. While you actively calm your body and mind with other meditation techniques, with TM this should happen by itself. For the time of meditation, the mind is practically turned off like a light switch. What sounds creepy is healing according to the TM doctrine.

Any attempt to force inner calm is considered counterproductive. However, the latter cannot always be avoided. Beginners in particular often tense up when their thoughts wander. For this reason, TM supporters affirm that professional instruction from a trained instructor is essential in order to correctly learn the technique.

You will never find Transcendental Meditation as a course offer in your sports or yoga studio. The fact that the followers hold a downright secret cult around the TM distinguishes this meditation technique significantly from other meditation concepts. Some people are skeptical about secrecy, while in others it is precisely this that arouses curiosity.

TM: one of the most controversial types of meditation around

Transcendental Meditation has come under repeated criticism in the past. This is less about the meditation technique as such, but more about the cult around it. Critical voices accuse the founder Maharishi of being a sect-like association. For example, you will only receive specific meditation instructions after paying a high admission fee.

In addition, TM followers are not only active in the field of meditation. The TM organization acts as an economically active company, e.g. B. in the field of Ayurveda. The organization has renamed itself several times. Since 2000 it has appeared under the name “Global Land of World Peace”.

In addition to meditation, the so-called "Maharishi Vedic Science" plays a decisive role. This is an esoteric teaching that deals with education, music and architecture. Maharishi's stated ambition is to create a more peaceful and happier society.

Critics point out that all TM teaching is based on the idea of ​​an individual and is subject to their (arbitrary) rules. So z. For example, the mantras assigned by TM teachers have no personal value for the apprentice. In addition, the positive effects of TM meditation have not been adequately scientifically proven. The so-called “yogic flying” is particularly controversial.

Benefits of Transcendental Meditation

Even if the cult of the Transcendental Meditation may seem suspicious to some, the technology as such can bring advantages. We want to shed some light on these now:

The positive effects on the body and mind

As with any type of meditation, Transcendental Meditation also has a positive effect on the body and mind. Regular transcendental meditation leads to deep relaxation, which promotes stress reduction. It is well known that stress is one of the most common triggers for physical and mental illnesses (burn-out, chronic pain, etc.). A study by the Free University of Berlin clearly shows this.

In Transcendental Meditation, an even deeper state of relaxation should be achieved than in deep sleep. This achieves further health-promoting effects:

The Maharishi Effect

As mentioned before, Maharishi, the founder of TM, wants to contribute to a peaceful and happier society with his esoteric teaching. According to Maharishi, this goal could already be achieved if only a small percentage of the population performed the Transcendental Meditation on a regular basis.

He concluded this based on a statistic in midsize US cities: where people meditated regularly, crime rates fell. He named this observation after himself: The term "Maharishi Effect" was born. Admittedly, that sounds pretty presumptuous at first.

There is, however, a certain truth: meditation actually has a soothing effect. Those who feel calm and relaxed inside are less prone to violence.

However, the Maharishi Effect, as interpreted by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, is not based on a scientific basis.

The transcendental meditation viewed critically

One of the biggest points of criticism of the TM doctrine, besides the often criticized "sectarian character", is the lack of transparency. This contradicts the basic idea of ​​meditation, which should be open to everyone. Whoever wants to learn Transcendental Meditation must first pay a large sum for it The cost of a basic course is around € 1100.00.

Since it has not been proven whether Transcendental Meditation offers any significant advantages over other techniques, you should consider carefully whether you want to make this large investment. Transcendental Meditation is also criticized for practices such as "yogic flying". The altered state of consciousness is supposed to make the body float. You can imagine scientists pulling their hair out when they hear something like this is physically impossible for humans.

Is it worth learning the Transcendental Meditation?

There is no general answer to this question. It is an individual decision. Basically, meditation is a really good thing. We'll leave it open whether it has to be transcendental meditation.
