Is asking questions a mistake?

Job & Career

The job interview helps the company and the applicant to get to know each other better. The aim of the HR manager is to find out whether the potential new employee meets the requirement profile and fits the company. It is not uncommon for questions to be asked in order to lure the applicant out of the reserve. So-called stress or trick questions are asked to irritate or provoke. The following shows how you can behave confidently in such situations.

Basically, at a job interview, you have to be calm. In a stressful situation, take a short breath and reflect on your preparation. When it comes to stress questions, it is primarily not about your answer, but about your ability to stress and your pain threshold.

Stress issues

How do you find it to be criticized?
The important thing here is that you don't answer that you don't mind at all. They wouldn't do that for you anyway. Focus on constructive criticism, which can be a little uncomfortable at times, but is still very useful. By doing this, you convey that you are only human but can accept criticism.

What is your biggest mistake - and what did you learn from it?
You shouldn't answer this question too openly (but lying stories are also taboo). This question is aimed at your self-assessment and self-criticism. Do not mention mistakes here that are repeated. Nor should you blame others for your mistake. Stand by your mistakes and share what you learned from them.

What added value would your attitude bring to our company?
This is a very popular question from recruiters. However, you can prepare yourself for this question in advance by carefully analyzing the profile of the position. Also mention that you can identify well with the company philosophy. Address the emotional level here.

Which three positive character traits are you missing?
With this question, underline characteristics that are insufficiently developed in your company and therefore expandable. For example, you can mention here that you are being too scrupulous and double-check things before, for example, submitting a document. However, you should emphasize that this is due to an effort to do a good job, and not due to a lack of professional competence.

Which books have influenced your career the most?
Here you mustn't answer that you didn't have time to read, or just read comics. If you really read only a little, you can switch to news platforms on the Internet when answering this question.
Otherwise, caution should be exercised on political and other sensitive issues. It also makes no sense to be the current number 1 on the bestseller list if you haven't read the work. That could end up embarrassing.

You seem too inexperienced for this job, don't you think?
Now you have to convince the interviewer of yourself. Even with little experience, you can bring a breath of fresh air to the tasks and tackle the challenges in an unconventional way. What is important here is a self-confident appearance and mention the plus points on your competency account.

General tips

Don't forget your humor on this very important matter. For example, the question “What are your weaknesses?” Can be answered with “How much time do you have”. This bridges some time and you can come up with a suitable answer. Don't overdo it with your humor, however, and quickly get back to answering the question with seriousness.
And last but not least: Preparation is the be-all and end-all. In order to counter stress or tricky questions with a good answer, it is important to deal well with your own skills and abilities. And don't forget to ask your future employer questions yourself.
